The trophy consists of a six tier black wooden base with shield shaped plaques engraved with the winners and the year they were honoured.  There are no names and blank shields for the years 1983, 1986, 1988 to 1993 and 1996.  A  top black marble podium  holds a silver inscription plaque with an etching of Tom Longboat  and the inscription: "THE TOM LONGBOAT TROPHY FOR THE OUTSTANDING NATIVE INDIAN ATHLETE OF THE YEAR IN CANADA". Two white marble  decorative accents are located at the side of the podium and a  silver figure of a man with his right arm extended over his head is standing on the top.
Large silver trophy that rests on a black wooden base.  Five plates list the name of the winners over the years.  Two female figures holding laurel wreaths act as handles.  The lid has Dominion of Canada Crest on both sides with two beavers flanking them.  Three British flags on top and relief of marathon runners circle the bottom of the cup just above base.
