Story

In 1969, curling champion Don Duguid decided to retire from competition; he was satisfied with his curling career, which included two Manitoba Curling Association Bonspiel Grand Aggregate victories in 1963 and 1965, two trips to the Macdonald Brier, and one glorious Brier victory in 1965. In 1970, Duguid was approached by fellow Granite Curling Club members Rod Hunter, Jim Pettapiece, and Bryan Wood. They were familiar with Duguid's outstanding record and thought that he would be an ideal replacement for their absent skip. Duguid was convinced to come out of retirement, thus completing one of Canada's most successful rinks in history. In 1970, Duguid's team won the local and provincial championships before going on to capture the Macdonald Brier. Their continued success earned them the Grand Aggregate Championship, the Henry Birks Trophy, the CBC Curling Series, the Crystal Trophy, and a trip to the World Curling Championships in Utica, New York. There, they played eight consecutive undefeated games, beating Scotland in the finals to claim the world title for Canada. Duguid's rink met with similar success in 1971, reclaiming their title in nearly every championship series, including the Macdonald Brier. At the 1971 World Championships, they won all nine of their games, boosting their grand international victory count to a record mark of 17 consecutive matches, and claiming the world championship crown once more. This time, Duguid retired from competition for good, but he did not stray far from the curling world. In 1972, he teamed with fellow curling enthusiast Don Chevrier on CBC's "Curling Classic," a popular Saturday afternoon program that ran until 1981. He was also a commentator for major Canadian and international curling events, covering the 1992 and 1998 Olympic Games with CBC, and the 2002 and 2006 Games for NBC. A pioneer in curling telecasting, Duguid was the first to mike curlers during live broadcasts, thus bringing the audience closer to the action. As a tribute to his brilliant competitive record, which includes three Macdonald Brier titles, three Manitoba Bonspiel Grand Aggregate victories, and two World Championship Titles, Duguid received honoured place in both the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame and the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame.
