CALGARY— The IIHF World Junior Championship provides Canadians with some of the best annual hockey action, so to celebrate the 2012 tournament coming to Alberta for the first time since 1995, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and Hockey Canada have partnered to share the excitement of the event by opening the IIHF World Junior Championship Exhibit today.

“Together with Hockey Canada, we are pleased to present this new, limited-time exhibit in our Changing Gallery from Dec. 15, 2011 to May 28, 2012. The exhibit has been inspired by the rare opportunity of Calgary and Edmonton hosting the World Juniors and by the great fortune of having Hockey Canada as our newest next-door neighbour,” said Janice Smith, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame director of exhibits and programming. “The exhibit showcases the official team jerseys from the ten teams participating in this year’s World Juniors, team rosters, and medals and jerseys from World Junior standout players, including Canadian Jordan Eberle.”

”The World Juniors are a Canadian institution, having become a central part of the holiday season in our country,” said Bob Nicholson, president and CEO of Hockey Canada. “We are excited to partner with Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame to showcase not only this year’s tournament in Alberta, but the rich history of the World Juniors as well.”

The 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship will take place in Calgary and Edmonton from Dec. 26, 2011 to Jan. 5, 2012. The tournament is organized annually by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) for national under-20 teams. The new exhibit at Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame will be open over the holidays, including Dec. 27-30 and Jan. 2.

Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame will feature new exhibits in its Changing Gallery every six months. Admission to Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame includes a visit to the new exhibit as well as the 11 galleries featuring 50 hands-on interactives and more than 1,000 artefacts, and the 120-seat theatre showing an 11-minute feature on Canada’s greatest sport moments.
