Unveil New RIO 2016 Exhibit!
Calgary, June 22, 2016 –The Class of 2016 inductees selected to receive the highest sporting honour in Canada are in Calgary for the first time to see the Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame facility located at WinSport’s Canada Olympic Park. An exhibit featuring the inductees will be opened in their honour following their official induction on November 1, 2016.
While in Calgary, the Class of 2016 launched the grand opening of the new Follow the Spirit: RIO 2016 exhibit featuring 13 Canadian Olympic and Paralympic medal hopefuls including Paralympic Silver Medallists Brent Lakatos and Aurelie Rivard along with Olympic Bronze Medallists Derek Drouin, Antoine Valois-Fortier, Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion. Also featured are Shawn Barber, the first Canadian to clear 6.0m in pole vault and 2015 Pan American Games rugby gold medallist, Jen Kish, who will be a part of history as rugby sevens makes its Olympic debut in Rio. The official Olympic and Paralympic RIO mascots, not available for purchase outside of Brazil, are on display; the 2016 Olympic Games Mascot Vinicius, named after poet Vinicius de Moraes, and 2016 Paralympic Games mascot Tom, named after musician Tom Jobim. Follow the Spirit: RIO 2016 is now open to the public to get Canadians into the Olympic spirit.
The Class of 2016 will be joined by 31 Honoured Members from across North America including Cassie Campbell-Pascall, Serge Savard and Mark Tewksbury tonight and tomorrow in the National Sport Heroes Celebration & Golf Tournament to help support Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame’s national youth education programs. These programs aim to share the stories of the inducted sport legends to inspire Canadian youth to set goals, dream big, and be the best they can be in sport, school, work and life.
