His dedication to sports, his passion for his province and his love for his country can sum up the lifetime career in sports for Dr. Jean-Guy Ouellet. One can argue that Dr. Ouellet is a renaissance man of sport. He has held various positions as a collegiate coach and academic, as a national sport advisor, and as an international official. His knowledge and expertise in sports helped establish many provincial and national sports organizations. He was the founder and President of the Québec Volleyball Federation, the first Vice-President of the Canadian Volleyball Association, member of Mission Québec 76, advisor to various Government of Québec ministries, and was the pioneer in the establishment of Québec en Forme, an organization dedicated to promoting a healthy active lifestyle for the youth of Québec.
His participation in numerous national and international organizations such as the Canadian Olympic Association, Sport Canada, the Government of Canada, the Canadian Council of Provincial and Territorial Sport Federations, the Canadian Olympic Committee, and the International Olympic Academy have helped to shape the Canadian sport scene. As an educator and sport administrator in the 1960’s and 1970’s, he helped design and implement various programs to help Quebec amateur athletes and coaches improve training and better prepare them for international competition, programs that still continue today. Dr. Ouellet has also helped change the landscape of sport for the average Canadian by making the sport system more effective and inclusive. His expertise and knowledge in developing sport policy in Canada has left a legacy of facilities, programs and opportunities for Canadians across the country. Today, many of the programs that Dr. Ouellet helped design are used as a model for other provinces and other countries all over the world.
