Story

In 1948, at 20 years of age Gerald Gratton competed in the London Olympic Games, a first for a Canadian in Olympic weightlifting competition, placing fifth.  In 1950, he won Gold in the 75kg Combined event at the British Empire Games in New Zealand.   During the 1950’s, Gerald was recognized for his great discipline and work ethic and was considered one of Canada’s best athletes winning numerous medals and setting records in Canada and the British Commonwealth.   

At the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games, he tied the middle-weight world record in press and won a Silver medal.  In 1954, Gerald was given the honour of bearing the flag at the opening ceremonies of the British Empire Games and won the middle-weight category. In 1956 he was a member of the Canadian team at the Olympic Games in Melbourne and participated in his last Commonwealth Games in 1958.
